Here’s A Great Way To Add More Turmeric To Your Diet

Recently, I’ve been looking into turmeric and all it’s health benefits.  I made a couple of detailed posts here and here.   It really is a super spice and can benefit your health in many ways, so its a good idea to eat it as much as you can.

But what if you don’t want to have curry or turmeric flavored food every day?

I came up with the perfect solution!  For the past couple of weeks I’ve been experimenting with adding turmeric to my smoothies and it’s working perfectly.  The best part is, it seems I can add it to any smoothy and it really doesn’t affect the taste at all.

I simply put the ingredients for the smoothy in the blender (I use a Vitamix) and then I add 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon turmeric PLUS about 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil PLUS about 1/8 teaspoon black pepper.

The coconut oil and black pepper are essential because they help your body absorb the nutrients that make turmeric good for you.

I know you’re probably thinking that pepper is going to taste gross in a fruit smoothy but I’m telling you, you can’t even taste it!  I tried this combination in a bunch of different smoothies and you’d never know the turmeric, pepper and oil were added (I even gave a few to my husband who would never have pepper or turmeric in a smoothie and didn’t tell him and he had no idea!)

One thing – I’ve never found anything on the ration of pepper and oil to turmeric so I’m just winging it on that but it seems like plenty -  if anyone knows the answer to that let me know!

Oh, and here’s the other thing… you know how messy turmeric can be to cook with and how that yellow stain gets on everything?  Well if you just scoop out a little bit right from the spice bottle (I use a little 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon that fits right in the bottle) and then just dump it into the blender you don’t have to worry about all that mess!

  1. Thanks for this tip, I hadn’t thought of adding it to my smoothies, but it’s definitely something I’ll try out the next time. And if you really don’t tast it, like you say, I might even be able to have my kids drink it too, that would be a plus :)

    Awesome that you can’t even taste the pepper. I have terrible sinus problems and I know that pepper is supposed to help, but I hate pepper. But if you can put it in a smoothie and not taste it, that I will definitely try.

      Yes, I was actually really surprised that you couldn’t taste it. At first, I was sprinkling the pepper on top – after the smoothie was made, I would pour it in the glass and then sprinkle on the pepper. Even with the fruit smoothies! You could taste it that way so then I got the idea to put it in before I mixed it up and it worked great! Try it!
